Bert and Elaine Klein, of Reklein Stables, own and bred Change Up.

Change Up, a homebred graded stakes-winning filly for Bertram, Elaine, and Richard Klein, has been retired from racing because of recurring knee problems.

A 4-year-old daughter of Distorted Humor  , Change Up won or placed in 13 of 16 races and earned $375,420.  She captured an optional claiming race July 5 at Churchill Downs in her one and only turf start in what was her final race.

“She gave us a great deal of pleasure and went out a winner,” Richard Klein said. “We planned to race her at Saratoga this weekend.”

Change Up won both the Pocahontas Stakes (gr. III) at Churchill Downs and the Mountaineer Juvenile Fillies Stakes at 2 in 2006. Her seven stakes-placings included a runner-up effort in this year’s Hurricane Bertie Handicap (gr. III) at Gulfstream Park. The race is named after one of the Kleins’ homebred graded stakes winners.

Bred in Kentucky by Bertram Klein and Reklein Stables, Change Up is out of the stakes-winning Mt. Livermore mare Round Robin. She will be boarded at Fred and Nancy Mitchell’s Clarkland Farm near Lexington. Breeding plans are undecided.
