Suffolk Downs, Dog Track Strike Deal

Suffolk Downs and Wonderland Greyhound Park have reached a partnership agreement allowing Suffolk to buy the dog track, and maybe help the owners land a casino gambling franchise.

Suffolk principal shareholder Richard Fields said Aug. 13 the deal will preserve jobs and allow the two entities to share in future development. It does not commit them to continuing dog racing at Wonderland, however.

For now, the tracks will remain separately owned and operated. The owners said they will work together to expand their gambling and entertainment offerings.

Gov. Deval Patrick has proposed licensing three casino gambling resorts in Massachusetts, including one in greater Boston. Boston Mayor Thomas Menino has expressed support for an application by Suffolk, located in East Boston less than two miles from Wonderland.

Analysts believe Suffolk's chances would improve if it weren't competing with another track owner. Under one scenario, Wonderland could become a satellite site if Suffolk landed a casino.
