Muthathir Filly Tops Deauville's 2nd Day

Sheikh Hamdan's Shadwell Stud was a powerful force on the second day of the Arqana yearling sale in Deauville, France, Aug. 16, buying the top two lots. Through his racing manager Angus Gold, Sheikh Hamdan, who was present, went to 570,000 euros for a daughter of Muthathir out of the Anabaa mare Princess d’Orange. The filly was consigned by Haras de Mezeray, where the Shadwell-owned stallion is based.
Muthathir sired recent Beverley D. Stakes (gr. IT) winner Mauralakana.

"He (Muthathir) seems to upgrade his mares, and his produce progress well and are tough,” Gold said.  "She (the 570,000-euro yearling) is an athletic filly with real quality and a wonderful outlook. She will go back to Britain or Ireland before we decide where she will be trained, but it is likely that she will return to France."
Gold, who made four purchases during the session, also spent 540,000 euros on a Green Tune filly out of a Green Desert mare. The yearling, consigned by Haras du Grandcamp, is a half-sister to two winners.
"I saw her at the farm three weeks ago and loved her,” Gold said. “She has lots of class but I didn’t expect her to make that amount of money. Green Tune produces solid results and we have the 2-year-old half-brother by Linamix (Alafoor), who has already shown that he has ability."
Sheikh Mohammed's bloodstock manager, John Ferguson, the leading buyer on the first day, also bought four during the second session, topped by a 500,000-euro Dalakhani -- Sara Moon colt consigned by Haras de la Louviere.
"Dalakhani has started very well and this was one of the most athletic colts we saw, while he is also from a good farm," Ferguson said.
There were increases all-around for the second day, following an excellent first session.  Seventy-nine of the 102 yearlings offered were sold. They grossed 10,295,000 euros and averaged 130,316 euros. Their median was 100,000 euros. Last year during the comparable session, the 72 horses sold grossed 8,959,000 euros and averaged 124,431 euros. Their median was 90,000 euros.
