Zayat Has Large Consignment at Keeneland

Edited press release

Zayat Stables has 90 horses cataloged in Eaton Sales’ consignment for the Keeneland November breeding stock sale. They include 2007 Santa Ysabel Stakes (gr. III) winner Baroness Thatcher and Premium Wine, who scored in the 2007 Gallant Bob Handicap at Philadelphia Park and finished third in the 2008 Carter Handicap (gr. I) at Aqueduct.

Ahmed Zayat, the stables' owner, plans to make the offering of stock from his racing operation an annual event in the fall at Keeneland.

“There are many owners who prefer to purchase ready-made racehorses and starting this November, we will provide them a consistent opportunity,” Zayat said. “Our focus remains on developing young horses. This approach means we can provide for an underserved market by allowing a broad ownership base to acquire quality racing stock from our stable every year. I have had a lot of fun racing these horses and I am hoping that other owners will experience the joy and pride those magnificent animals brought me.”

Said Reiley McDonald of Eaton Sales, “ This is an outstanding group. And these aren’t unproven yearlings that may be ready to race in a year. These are racehorses of quality that span the racing scene – from domestic stake competitors to ones that can compete in the Dubai Racing Festival or in Europe next spring. There’s a lot of fun racing ahead for their new owners.”

Zayat Stables has a portfolio of more than 270 horses, including 170 horses in-training. The operation ranks second this year on the North American list of leading owners by earnings with a total of $5,545,446 through Oct. 7. The stables horses have won 88 races. Zayat was a leading buyer at the recent Keeneland September yearling sale, purchasing 30 yearlings for $6,732,000.

The Keeneland November auction begins Nov. 3 in Lexington. The Zayat Stables horses will be offered throughout the sale, starting on Nov. 4.

“Our November Sale is a venue where rarely a consignment of ready to race Thoroughbreds of this quality and scope is made available,” said Nick Nicholson, Keeneland’s president and chief executive officer. “We applaud Mr. Zayat’s initiative in providing buyers at all levels this unique annual opportunity.”
