Magna Graduate to Stand At Darby Dan

Son of Honor Grades to stand at Darby Dan for $5,000.

Magna Graduate , Elisabeth Alexander’s multiple graded stakes winner, will stand at Darby Dan Farm near Lexington upon the completion of his racing career, it was announced Oct. 10.

Magna Graduate, a six-time graded winner and earner of nearly $2.5 million, is a son of Honor Grades—Peacock Alley, by Fast Play. Honor Grades, a stakes-placed son of Danzig, retired to stud at Bonnie Heath Farm in Central Florida prior to the 1993 breeding season. He moved to Darby Dan in 1997 and stood there until his death in the spring of 2002.

“Magna Graduate’s sire stood here and we are excited at the opportunity for him to follow in his father’s footsteps,” said Darby Dan owner John Phillips in a release. “He has raced at 15 different race tracks and in Dubai. His attractiveness, heart, and durability will make him popular among breeders looking for value and proven track record.”

The 6-year-old Magna Graduate, who will be syndicated, will stand for $5,000 live foal.

A graded stakes winner at 3, 4, and 5, Magna Graduate has won nine of 33 starts and has placed 12 times. He was previously trained by Todd Pletcher, but is now conditioned by Steve Asmussen.

At 3, he landed the Clark Handicap (gr. II), Discovery Handicap (gr. III), and Pegasus Stakes (gr. III), while also winning the John Battaglia Memorial Stakes. As a 4-year-old he finished fourth, but was elevated to third, in the Dubai World Cup (UAE-I), and later that year won the Queens County Handicap (gr. III).

Last year, he won both the Razorback Handicap and Excelsior Breeders’ Cup Handicap (both gr. III) and ran second to Flashy Bull in the Stephen Foster Handicap (gr. I). While winless this year, he ran a solid second last time out to Fairbanks Sept. 27 in the $500,000 Hawthorne Gold Cup (gr. II).

Bred in Kentucky by Nicole Zitani and Ramon Rangel, Magna Graduate is a half-brother to stakes winner Gralley (by Mr. Greeley). His second dam is the French group III-placed Anna’s Honor, a daughter of Alleged.
