Tail Hairs to Raise Money for Charity

Woven into violin bow.

It’s amazing how inventive racing people can be when there is a need to raise money for a good cause.

In New Zealand Oct. 22, tail hairs from three-time group I Melbourne Cup winner Makybe Diva were threaded into a violin bow. They were joined by tail hairs from fellow champion and multiple group I winner Sunline, Breeders’ Cup winner and champion Ouija Board, and champion sires from three different countries: Sadlers Wells; Redoute's Choice; and Zabeel.

The tail hairs have been collected and combined in the making of a unique violin bow (known as the Bow of Champions) to be auctioned at a prestigious spinal cord injury trust, CatWalk's Up & Away Charity Dinner, in Christchurch Nov. 13.

The bow has been "forged in the ancient tradition of music-making, using the very best horse hair available," the organization said.
