Spectacular Bid Opens 3-Year-Old Season

You Luckie Mann and Silent Valor head a field of eight at Gulfstream Park.

You Luckie Mann and Silent Valor figure to attract most of the attention in the $100,000 Spectacular Bid Stakes, the six-furlong event which kicks off Gulfstream Park's 2009 series for 3-year-olds on opening day Jan. 3.

The Spectacular Bid, which was not contested in 2008, drew a field of eight.

You Luckie Mann was an impressive 11-length winner of the 5 1/2-furlong Birdonthewire Stakes at Calder Race Course in his last start Oct. 18. Trained by Marty Wolfson for owner Karamer Stable, the Florida-bred son of Exchange Rate debuted with a 14 3/4-length win over maidens at Calder last July. The gray colt has sandwiched his two wins around back-to-back third-place finishes in divisions of the Florida Stallion Stakes during the summer.

Shaun Bridgmohan, who was aboard You Luckie Mann in the Birdonthewire, retains the mount and they will break from post 2.

Silent Valor comes off an eighth-place finish in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I), although he was less than four lengths behind the victorious Midshipman. Owned by Let's Go Stable and trained by Todd Pletcher, the Kentucky-bred Lion Heartcolt won Monmouth Park's Sapling (gr. III) by 1 1/2 lengths Aug. 31 prior to finishing fifth in Oak Tree's Norfolk Stakes (gr. I) at Santa Anita one month later.

The dark bay, to be ridden by John Velazquez, won two of five starts in 2008 and leads the field in earnings with $136,200. He'll break from post 7.

Completing the field for the Spectacular Bid are Ken and Sarah Ramsey’s Notonthesamepage; Zayat Stable’s Jazzandthemagician; John Dillon’s Vinnies Wild Tale; Brian Prichard’s Under Contract; Joseph Pace’s Put It Back Twenty; and J. Robert Harris Jr.’s Bee Cee Cee,.
