Axel Foley Sold Before El Camino Real

Jeff Singer bought the Officer colt.

Axel Foley, one of the favorites for the upcoming $200,000 El Camino Real Derby (gr. III) Feb. 14 at Golden Gate Fields, has been privately purchased by Jeff Singer, it was announced Feb. 13. The 3-year-old Officer colt will remain in training with Doug O’Neill.

Previously owned by Kent Bloodstock, Axel Foley is 1-1-1 from four career starts, his most recent effort coming in the Jan. 17 California Derby when finishing second to Chocolate Candy. Those two will meet again in the El Camino Real on Saturday, where Axel Foley will wear blinkers for the first time.

Axel Foley, out of the Clever Trick mare Morganza, began his career in England for trainer John Best, winning one of two starts before shipping to the United States late last year. He finished sixth in the CashCall Futurity (gr. I) at Hollywood Park Dec. 20, his U.S. debut.

The Feb. 13 deal was brokered by Kern Thoroughbreds of Midway, Ky.

The El Camino Real Derby is featured on this week's edition of That Handicapping Show.
