Stepping onto the Fairplex Park track as the second-to-last horse to preview, a Distant View filly zipped a furlong in :09 4/5 for the fastest time of those cataloged for the Barretts March sale. A total of 91 2-year-olds worked March 5 in advance of the March 10 sale in Pomona, Calif.
While the Distant View filly was the only horse to officially shade 10 seconds for an eighth of a mile, those in attendance also admired an unofficial :09 4/5 for the very first horse of the day to preview, a Cactus Ridge filly who officially worked a quarter-mile in :20 4/5, the fastest at that distance. Some of those timing the works caught her first furlong in :09 4/5.
Four of the 2-year-olds breezed an eighth in :10 flat, while 19 others went in :10 1/5.
"I thought the surface was very fair," said Kim Lloyd, Barretts’ vice president of sales. "The surface was fantastic, and the track crew did a great job. They literally worked on the track from one in the morning the night before."
Southern California had received a strong rainstorm the day and evening before the preview. Lloyd said that the five-furlong Fairplex dirt surface was sealed in anticipation of the rain and then opened up after the storm system left the area.
Many Southern California trainers attended the preview for the sale, which has cataloged 124 horses. John Sadler, currently atop the Santa Anita standings, was among those watching the horses’ work, as was Dan Hendricks, whose purchases at past March sales have included Santa Anita Derby (gr. I) winner Brother Derek.
B.C.3. Thoroughbreds as agent has consigned the Distant View filly to the sale. She is out of the High Yield mare Upgraded and sold for $55,000 at the 2008 Keeneland fall yearling sale to John Brocklebank, agent. Brocklebank and Shane Chipman operate B.C.3. Thoroughbreds in Utah.
"She’s an awesome filly," said Chipman, who does much of the breaking and training of the B.C.3. prospects. "I loved the way she moved from day one."
The consignment also includes Boorah, a son of Empire Maker—Rahy Dolly, by Rahy, who previewed a furlong in :10 1/5.
"He has a nice, long stride," Chipman said.
Agent John O’Hara’s consignment included the Cactus Ridge filly, who is out of the Coronado's Quest mare Lodden Blue, and a daughter of Officer—Spanish Hound, by Foxhound. The Officerfilly went a furlong in :10.
The other three to preview in :10 were a daughter of Sky Mesa —Refugee, by Unaccounted For, from the SAB Training consignment; a son of Tribal Rule—Chalk Face, by Memo, from the Excel Bloodstock consignment; and a son of Songandaprayer—Inviting, by Exploit, from the Eddie Woods consignment.
The sale begins at 2 p.m. March 10 at the Hinds Pavilion at Fairplex.
