A field of 10 was drawn for the $100,000 Eight Belles Stakes (gr. III) to be held on May 2 at Churchill Downs, a race for 3-year-old fillies renamed for last year’s ill-fated Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) runner-up.
The 7 1/2-furlong Eight Belles, formally known as the La Troienne, is the second of five graded stakes on the Churchill program which features the 135th running of the Derby. Post time for the dirt sprint is set for 2:11 p.m. EDT.
Several promising fillies are in with a chance in the Eight Belles, including graded stakes winners C.S. Silk, Four Gifts and Just Jenda. Assigned top weight is Hollywood Starlet (gr. I) winner Laragh, who is also cross-entered in the Edgewood Stakes on May 1.
Laragh, owned by IEAH Stables and partners and trained by John Terranova, will carry 122 pounds with Edgar Prado aboard, if she goes to post. The daughter of Tapit was third in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf in October at Santa Anita.
Dale Romans trainee C.S. Silk will be looking for her first score since taking the Arlington-Washington Lassie (gr. III) last September. Four Gifts, a well-beaten fourth to Rachel Alexandra in the Fair Grounds Oaks (gr. II) last out, won the Delta Princess (gr. III) in December for trainer Steve Asmussen. Just Jenda has captured four of seven career starts, including the Honeybee (gr. III) for Larry Jones, who trains for his wife, Cindy.
