Apprentice jockey Anna Roberts recorded her first career riding victory April 29 at Evangeline Downs Racetrack & Casino when she booted home 3-2 race favorite King of Mardi Gras in the evening’s ninth race.
The 20-year-old Roberts graduated last year from the Chris McCarron North American Racing Academy in Lexington, and was making her first local start after riding sporadically at the recently concluded winter/spring meeting at the Fair Grounds in New Orleans, La. Wednesday’s winning mount was just her fifth overall start. She is the daughter of Fair Grounds assistant track photographer Lynn Roberts, who was the winner of the 2005 Media Eclipse Award for Photography.
King of Mardi Gras, an 8-year-old gelded son of Smoke Glacken, won by 4 ½ lengths and covered the five furlongs on a track labeled fast in :58.43. Trained by Jorge Lara and owned by Jan Haynes, he won for the 16th time in 60 career starts.
