De Francis Interested in Pimlico, Laurel

Joe De Francis has expressed an interest in buying back Pimlico and Laurel.

Joe De Francis, who sold two Maryland horse racing tracks to Magna Entertainment Corp., has expressed an interest in buying back Pimlico Race Course and Laurel Park.

De Francis told WBAL-TV in Baltimore he'd be "very interested" if his participation in Maryland horse racing would help save the industry and Laurel and Pimlico as operating businesses.

With Magna in bankruptcy, officials with the state of Maryland and city of Baltimore are fighting to keep Pimlico and the Preakness in Baltimore.

De Francis sold the two tracks to Magna in 2002. He was active in the company until last year.

But De Francis says he has not had any discussions with Magna about making a bid on the tracks.

(MEC recently announced a new plan to sell off some of its assets through a bankruptcy court auction process. Pimlico and other Maryland assets are not part of that plan, which was approved May 4.)
