Gozzip Girl All the Way in Sands Point

The Dynaformer filly won her second graded stakes May 30

Farnsworth Stables’ Gozzip Girl took all the heat, but was still able to find enough in the final yards to hold on for a 1 1/2-length victory in the $150,000 Sands Point (gr. IIT) (VIDEO) May 30 on the Belmont Park turf.

A hard-luck loser when finishing second by a neck in the Ashland (gr. I) last month at Keeneland, Gozzip Girl earned her third win from five starts this season and her second graded stakes score. The 3-year-old is trained by Tom Albertrani.
Dynaformer was well represented in the race, as he sired the trifecta of fillies that crossed the wire first, second, and third: Gozzip Girl, Warm Shower, and Bluegrass Princess.
Ridden by Kent Desormeaux, Gozzip Girl was boldly challenged by Bluegrass Princess for a quarter-mile, which went in :25.44. Gozzip Girl was able to hold a narrow advantage over her rival through the rest of the backstretch while getting an easy half-mile in :50.61 and three-quarters in 1:15.78. She hit the top of the lane with a one–length lead, dug in gamely on the inside, and held off Bluegrass Princess, Warm Shower, and 6-5 favorite Magical Affair in deep stretch.
The final time for 1 1/8 miles on the yielding turf was 1:51.24. Warm Shower came with a late run between horses under Rajiv Maragh to finish runner-up, three parts of a length better than Bluegrass Princess. Magical Affair was fourth in a field of seven sophomore fillies.
“(Albertrani) likes a jockey to get out there and feel it," Desormeaux said. "I worked her during the week, so I knew her and I knew she was doing very well. She was the best horse in the field and she got it done. It was an enjoyable ride, too. I just let her find a rhythm and that rhythm was on the lead. She cornered for home full of run.”
Bred in Kentucky by Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings from the Kingmambo mare Temperence Gift, Gozzip Girl won both the Coconut Grove and Herecomesthebride (gr. IIIT) on the Gulfstream Park grass before her Ashland try. She is now 4-1-0 from seven starts, with earnings of $362,194.
"She’s got such a long stride and she wants a distance of ground," Albertrani said. "At the quarter-pole, I was confident she would finish well. Hopefully, we’ll get invited to the American Oaks (gr. IT) on July 5 (at Hollywood Park).”
The winner paid $5, $3.40 and $2.70. The exacta (4-3) returned $62 and the trifecta (4-3-1) was $260.
