Belmont National TV Ratings Tumble

Without a Triple Crown on the line, ratings were down 49% from last year.

National television figures released June 11 showed ABC’s coverage of the June 6 Belmont Stakes (gr. I) garnered a 4.3 rating for its 5-7 p.m. ET program. That figure represents a 49% decrease from 2008’s 8.4 rating, when Big Brown  was running for a Triple Crown in the Belmont. The national rating equaled the overnight rating that was released the day following the race.

Each rating point equals approximately 1.15 million television sets tuned to the telecast.

Compared to 2007 and 2006, when a Triple Crown also was not on the line, ABC’s 2009 figures stacked up well. In 2007, the rating was 3.1, and a year earlier, a 3.5.  In the last year that NBC televised the Belmont, 2005, the rating for the non-Triple Crown Belmont was 5.0.
