from Calder Race Course
Trainer Marty Wolfson sent out back-to-back stakes winners during Calder’s Summit Preview June 13 when Andrew Rosen’s 3-year-old filly First Passage won the $95,500 Leave Me Alone Stakes (VIDEO). One race earlier, Wolfson-trained You Luckie Mann won the $84,000 Unbridled Stakes (VIDEO).
First Passage was ridden to victory by jockey Jermaine Bridgmohan, who was also aboard You Luckie Mann for Wolfson. The Kentucky-bred daughter of Giant's Causeway defeated Going to the Sun by three lengths in the six-furlong test and was timed in 1:12.54. Donttellmewhattodo was just a nose back in third.
First Passage paid $6.40, $3.60, and $2.60. Going to the Sun, shipping in from Louisiana for the race, returned $9 and $4.20. Coming to Calder from California, Donttellmewhattodo paid $2.40 to show.
The Leave Me Alone Stakes is the local prep race for the $200,000 Azalea Stakes (gr. III) July 11, Summit of Speed day at Calder.
Kramer Stables’ 3-year-colt You Luckie Mann held off a tough challenge by Prince Joshua in the six-furlong Unbridled Stakes to win by a half-length. For All Who Conga finished third, with Bidham fourth in the four-horse field.
You Luckie Mann was sent off as the 1-9 favorite and paid $2.10 and $2.10 in a race that offered no show wagering. Prince Joshua returned $4 to place.
You Luckie Mann earned $60,000 for the win. The Unbridled Stakes is the local prep for the $200,000 Carry Back Stakes (gr. II) July 11.
“Now I’ve got four weeks to get him ready for the Carry Back,” Wolfson said. “The good thing about him now is that he has learned to relax and sit off the pace instead of running off on the lead in :44 (half-mile) like he did earlier in his career. He might even be able to get seven-eighths now that he has learned to relax.”
Also in stakes action at Calder, Robert Pastor’s 5-year-old mare Marina Ballerina won the $72,000 U Can Do It Handicap as the favorite for trainer Kirk Ziadie, and Brian Prichard’s 6-year-old horse How's Your Halo posted a mild upset in the $73,350 Ponche Handicap at Calder, winning the six-furlong event by four lengths over longshot Green Vegas.
