Wyoming Downs Set to Kick Off Eight-Day Meet

Wyoming Downs, which begins its eight-day meet on June 27, has released its stakes schedule and it includes a number of traditional stakes races in addition to four AQHA Regional Challenge races, which have been moved from Les Bois Park.
Included in the stakes schedule will be the $2,500 added Inaugural Handicap at six furlongs, the Joe Joyce/Independence Day Handicap and the Evanston Speed Handicap at 4 1/2 furlongs for the Thoroughbreds, as well as the Silver Dollar Futurity and Derby, the Cowboy Classic/Blane Schvaneveldt Futurity, the Wyoming Downs Maiden Derby, the Bear River Handicap and the Dusty Stimpson/Jodi Behunin Derby for the Quarter Horses.
Approximately $120,000 in overnight purse money is available for horsemen during the meet, with total purse distribution to be about $300,000.
The stakes program was reduced from $5,000 to $2,500 this year. The state's only live horse-racing track, located in Evanston, has also shortened its season from 16 days to eight.
The Wyoming Downs meet, which concludes July 19, races are every Saturday and Sunday, except Fourth of July weekend, when it will race Friday, July 3, and Saturday, July 4. Racing kicks off each day at 1:05 p.m. PDT.
