Funny Cide to Appear at Ellis Park Opener

Will be first Derby winner at Kentucky track since Black Gold in 1927.

Funny Cide, the popular 2003 Kentucky Derby (gr. I) winner, will greet fans at Ellis Park on opening day, Saturday, July 11. The track is located in Henderson, Ky.

The New York-bred gelding will be the first known Kentucky Derby winner on Ellis' grounds since Black Gold in 1927. Funny Cide won two-thirds of the Triple Crown in 2003, taking both the Derby and the Preakness Stakes (gr. I). He also holds the 10th fastest Derby time in history.

Funny Cide will be in the Ellis Park paddock July 11 when the doors open at 11 a.m. (CT) until the horses arrive in the paddock for the first race. He will return to the paddock between the fourth and fifth races, with the time between those races extended to accommodate the Derby winner.

Funny Cide merchandise including a new product, Funny Cider, will be on sale by the paddock. Jack Knowlton from Sackatoga Stable, which owns and raced Funny Cide, will also be on hand signing autographs. Donations collected from the autographs will benefit the Kentucky Horse Park’s Hall of Champions, where Funny Cide is spending his retirement.
