Queen’s Plate winner Eye of the Leopard , who won a tight decision over Mr. Foricos Two U and the filly Milwaukee Appeal in an exciting finish last month, has been installed as the 9-5 favorite in the $500,000 Prince of Wales Stakes. The second leg of the Canadian Triple Crown is July 12 at Fort Erie.
The 1 3/16-mile test for 3-year-old Canadian breds also attracted Mr. Foricos Two U, who is 2-1 on the morning line, and Milwaukee Appeal, pegged at 5-2. A field of six was entered.
Sam-Son Farms' Eye of the Leopard prepped for the Prince of Wales with a six-furlong workout July 5 over the dirt training track at Woodbine with jockey Eurico Rosa da Silva aboard. The son of A.P. Indy breezed a snappy 1:12 flat for trainer Mark Frostad.
“He worked pretty much like he did before the Plate,” said da Silva, who won the Queen's Plate in his first try. “He’ll be ready.”
Eye of the Leopard drifted in the stretch run of the June 21 Queen's Plate but won with determination. Mr. Foricos Two U, who set the pace, very nearly scored a 7-1 upset. Mike Smith retains the mount. Woodbine Oaks winner Milwaukee Appeal, who had some traffic problems in the homestretch of the Queen's Plate but finished strongly, will be ridden once again by Stewart Elliot.
Also in the field are Flip for the Coin, fifth in the Queen's Plate, and Keino West, who ran sixth. Gallant completes the field.
