Thumb Injury Sidelines Bejarano

Could return to riding Sept. 6.

(Edited Del Mar press release)

Jockey Rafael Bejarano, who missed 27 days of the 37-day Del Mar meeting because of multiple facial injuries suffered in an opening-day spill, was off his mounts Sept. 5 following an injury to his right thumb on only the sixth day after his return from the earlier injury.

Bejarano complained of the hurt thumb early on Sept. 4's program and was advised to take off the rest of his mounts that day and have X-rays of the thumb. X-rays showed no fracture but did show a sprain.

Subject to a doctor's clearance, Bejarano might be able to ride Sept. 6 in two stakes races -- the Del Mar Derby (gr. IIT) aboard Meteore and the Pacific Classic (gr. I) on Parading.
