Calling it a bargain, Wyoming horse owner William J. Sims went to $450,000 to acquire a colt by Storm Cat to highlight the early portion of the Keeneland September yearling sale Sept. 14.
Consigned as Hip No. 27 by Craig and Holly Bandoroff’s Denali Stud, as agent for the Robert and Beverly Lewis Trust, the colt was produced from the champion mare Serena's Song, whose offspring have included graded-stakes winners Sophisticat and Grand Reward, both sired by Storm Cat, as well as stakes winner Harlington and Serena's Tune.
"I think that colt is a real bargain," said Sims, noting that he thought the colt, from the last full crop sired by Storm Cat, would bring at least a final bid of seven figures.
Sims said he has about 15 horses in training, mostly in Florida with trainer Marty Wolfson. He also breeds, noting that he has a Bernardini colt that is being sold during the Sept. 15 second session of the Keeneland sale.
