Smart and Fancy Seeks Another Turf Amazon Win

The mare won the race back in 2007

Park Avenue Racing Stable’s Smart and Fancy was installed as the tepid 3-1 morning-line favorite in what looks to be a hotly-contested renewal of the $200,000 Turf Amazon Handicap Sept. 26 at Philadelphia Park Casino & Racetrack.

Trained by Tony Dutrow, Smart and Fancy won the 2007 edition of the Turf Amazon and was runner-up by two lengths last year. A field of nine was entered for the race, a five-furlong sprint for fillies and mares.
Checking in as the 7-2 second choice is Obviously NY Stable’s Canadian Ballet, winner of the Lena Spencer Stakes earlier this month for Linda Rice during her historic training title at Saratoga. Rice will also send out the third choice, Ahvee's Destiny (4-1), who raced three times at the recently concluded Spa meet, winning once. Both Rice trainees finished off the board in this event a year ago.
Interestingly, the two graded stakes winners in the field, Queen ofthe Catsle (9-2) and Dubai Majesty (5-1), come in as the fourth and fifth choices, respectively, on the morning-line. A 5-year-old mare by Tale of the Cat , Queen of the Catsle won the Senator Ken Maddy Handicap (gr. IIIT) at Oak Tree at Santa Anita last year and ships in from California for trainer Howard Zucker. Dubai Majesty, who was scratched from the Presque Isle Masters (gr. IIIT) two weeks ago, makes her seventh start of the season for trainer Bret Calhoun. She won the Winning Colors (gr. III) on the Churchill Downs dirt in May and will make her first turf start in more than a year.
Smart and Fancy has narrowly missed in her last three starts—all New York stakes—after taking The Very One Stakes in May at Pimlico to begin her 6-year-old campaign. The daughter of Not For Love—Substitute Teacher, by Shelter Half, lost by a neck in her last two tries, including a third-place finish in the Sept. 2 Lena Spencer after coming with a late five-wide move.
Bred in Maryland by Dr. and Mrs. Thomas Bowman, Smart and Fancy has produced a consistent 14-5-6 record from 27 lifetime starts and has earned more than $800,000. She has never been off the board in 12 tries on grass, with six stakes victories to show from those efforts. She won the 2007 Turf Amazon by 2 1/2 lengths sunder Harry Vega. David Cohen will have the mount this time.
Post time for Philly Park’s feature is slated for 3:50 p.m. EDT.
