Kentucky Downs Saturday Program Rained Out

Kentucky Downs canceled its six-race program Sept. 26.

Consecutive days of heavy rain led Kentucky Downs, which offers only turf racing, to cancel its six-race program Sept. 26.

The six scheduled races were to join 10 races at Turfway Park for a 16-race card. The cancellation—announced early in the afternoon—created problems on Kentucky Cup day at Turfway.

Because the two tracks had scheduled one program, the majority of pick three and pick four wagers were canceled. Turfway officials attempted to play with post times to avoid having too much time between races later in the card.

Turfway president Bob Elliston said hoped money that would have been bet on Kentucky Downs races shifted to Turfway, but "the bottom line is it's not good."

When asked if in the future Kentucky Downs races wouldn't be part of Turfway programs, he said it could be difficult for a track that races only four days a year to access simulcast markets on its own.

"This is a blip on the radar screen," Elliston said.

Kentucky Downs, located on the Tennessee border, lost three races Sept. 21 because of the condition of its course. Those three races were rescheduled for Sept. 28, closing day, when 12 races are scheduled.
