Interactif may have stamped himself as the horse to beat in next month’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (gr. IIT), as he turned in a dominating performance in the $125,000 Bourbon Stakes (gr. IIIT) (VIDEO) Oct. 11 at Keeneland.
A homebred of Wertheimer and Frere, Interactif came from last early on, advanced through the backstretch, and was swung very wide on the final turn for his winning move. The 2-year-old son of Broken Vow swept to the front at the three-sixteenths-pole and pulled away down the stretch under Kent Desormeaux. He held off a late bid from Codoy to win by one length.
The final time for 1 1/16 miles on a yielding turf course was 1:145.24. Codoy was runner-up at odds of 57-1, 2 1/2 lengths in front of third-place Family Foundation.
The victory earned Interactif an automatic bid to the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf to be held Nov. 7 at Santa Anita. Todd Pletcher trains the bay colt. It was his second consecutive stakes score.
Billions Boy and Activity Report led the field of 12 through the early stages of the Bourbon, taking them through splits of :23.25 and :47.75 while Exhi, Asphalt, and Raging Wit raced close to the pace. Raging Wit was at the front of a tightly-packed group of juveniles when they came off the turn, but he was soon swallowed by Interactif, who came charging from his six-wide position and struck the lead.
Interactif won for the third time in four lifetime starts. He is now unbeaten in two starts on turf, as he won the With Anticipation (gr. IIIT) Sept. 4 at Saratoga last out.
Bred in Kentucky, Interactif is out of the Broad Brush mare Broad Pennant. He has now earned $164,250.
Sent off as the even-money choice, Interactif paid $4, $3.20, and $2.80. The exacta (4-10) returned $142 and the trifecta (4-10-9) was $933.
