Saratoga Welcomes Old Friends

A Jan. 31 fundraiser will benefit the retired racehorses at Saratoga's Old Friends.

On Jan. 31, ThoroFan is partnering with the Union Grille at the Saratoga Hilton to conduct a fundraiser for the retired racehorses currently enjoying their post-race careers at Saratoga County’s Bobby Frankel division of Old Friends at the Cabin Creek farm in neighboring Greenfield Center.

According to a release, admission is free, and Andy Brindisi, owner of The Union Grille, will donate 50% of sales on all food and beverages on the menu served from noon until 5p.m.

Additionally, select artisans will be donating a percentage of sales on their products to the Old Friends facility. Funds raised will be used to construct several needed weather shelters for the equine athletes enjoying their retirement.

The Saratoga Hilton is providing a special overnight rate of $99 for a double room /$129 for a suite Jan. 30, for those wishing to attend the City of Saratoga Springs in the off-season. Mention “ThoroFan/Cabin Creek” for this rate. ThoroFan guests are invited to an Executive Suite party the evening of Jan. 30 as well.

A highlight of the event will be a tribute to the grade I-winning millionaire filly Rachel Alexandra, whose birthday is in January. Children and other fans are encouraged to send their specially designed birthday cards to The Union Grille care of the Saratoga Hilton, 534 Broadway, Saratoga Springs NY 12866 where the cards will be displayed.

In addition to a birthday cake, at approximately 3 p.m., those in attendance will sing “Happy Birthday” over a pre-arranged phone connection to the filly’s barn. Other activities will also be on hand to enhance the event.

While not required, reservations are recommended. Those making advance reservations and attending will be eligible for unique door prizes. Make your reservations by calling The Union Grille at (518) 682-2600. Again, mention “ThoroFan/Cabin Creek” when calling.
