OBS February Sale Has 160 Juveniles

Number in the catalog is down 20% from a year ago.

The Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co. has cataloged 160 horses for its February select sale of 2-year-olds in training, which is the first major juvenile auction of 2010. The number for the sale, which will be held Feb. 16 in Central Florida, is down 20% from 2009’s total of 200.

The decrease in the catalog’s size isn’t surprising because many yearling-to-juvenile pinhookers bought fewer yearlings in 2009 after their profits dropped in a recession-battered 2-year-old market earlier in the year. In addition, the auction usually has fewer horses than other select juvenile sales because of its early date, which limits its catalog to the most precocious horses that haven’t experienced injuries or other setbacks.

Juveniles in the catalog include an Officer half-brother to Purely Cozzene, who captured the 2000 La Jolla (gr. IIIT) and Will Rogers (gr. IIIT) Handicaps; a Bluegrass Cat  half-sister to 2004 Brazilian Horse of the Year Pico Central, who scored in the Vosburgh Stakes (gr. I) and the Metropolitan (gr. I) and Carter (gr. I) Handicaps in 2004; and a Bernardini  half-sister to 2006 Fantasy Stakes (gr. II) winner Ready to Please.

Also in the book are a Successful Appeal  half-sister to 2008 Barbaro Stakes (gr. III) winner Magical Forest; Simply Devoted, a Congrats  half-sister to 2002 Canadian grade III winner Lil Personalitee; a Giant’s Causeway colt that is the first foal out of a half-sister to 1998 Kentucky Oaks (gr. I) and 1999 Three Chimneys Spinster Stakes (gr. I) winner Keeper Hill; a Sweetsouthernsaint half-brother to 2003 grade II winner Shake You Down; and an A.P. Indy colt that is the first foal out of 2004 and 2005 grade II winner Capeside Lady.

The sale’s under tack show is scheduled for Feb. 12.
