Gulfstream to Assist Haitian Relief Effort

Donations came from track employees, management, and jockeys.

Gulfstream Park officials will present a check for $10,000 to the American Red Cross Jan. 31 to support local and national efforts on behalf of victims of the earthquake in Haiti.

A release from the track said the donation represents donations from racetrack and casino employees, jockeys, and track management. The check will be presented following the fifth race on the 10-race Sunshine Millions program.

"In the midst of celebrating Florida Thoroughbred racing, the entire Gulfstream Park team felt a strong need to reach out to our neighbors who are facing such dire circumstances," Gulfstream president Ken Dunn said in a statement. "With one of the larger Haitian communities here in Florida, hopefully the donation will offer at least some measure of relief and hope."

"Our prayers are with all the people in Haiti," said John Velazquez, Gulfstream’s leading jockey and Jockeys’ Guild representative. "For now, every jockey in the room wants to do what little we can to help."
