The deceased broodmare Urban Sea and her 3-year-old colt Sea the Stars were honored by the Irish Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association during its Jan. 30 awards program.
Urban Sea, who died in March 2009 after giving birth, was honored with a Special Achievement Award. A European and French champion on the racetrack, Urban Sea was a blue hen as a broodmare. She was named Ireland’s Broodmare of the Year in 2001 and 2009, and was also named England's top broodmare of 2001.
Sea The Stars, whose six group I victories in 2009 dominated European racing, was honored by the ITBA as top 3-year-old colt in 2009. He was previously honored with a unanimous selection as Ireland's Horse of the Year and was voted Cartier Horse of the Year for all of Europe.
