Remington Alters Schedule for Thoroughbreds

Remington Park will alter its live racing schedule beginning in August.

With the exception of Oklahoma Derby day Oct. 10, Remington Park will eliminate Sunday racing from its fall Thoroughbred schedule, track officials said.

Remington will keep its 67-day schedule for the Aug. 19-Dec. 11 season, but will operate on a Wednesday-through-Saturday basis. Regular post time will be 6:30 p.m. (Central time).

Remington general manager Scott Wells said competing against the National Football League has been a losing battle.

“This is football country, and we’ve tried to buck this trend,” Wells said. “It hasn’t worked out for us. Also, there are a lot of signals from simulcast tracks that have made it tough for us to compete. We hope to be a standout on Wednesdays as far as sending out our signal, and we know that live racing also helps our casino business.”

Wells said the decision to change the schedule was done after several meetings with Thoroughbred Racing Association of Oklahoma officials.

Remington is closing in on opening of its 50-day Quarter Horse/mixed meet, which will run from March 5 through May 31.

The track is owned by Global Gaming RP, a subsidiary of Chickasaw Nation, which took over operations Jan. 1 after purchasing the facility from Magna Entertainment Corp.
