Moelis to Retire as President of TCA

The founder will remain active on the board of directors.

Herb Moelis, the president and founder of Thoroughbred Charities of America has announced his intention to retire as president effective June 30.

Moelis, who founded TCA with his wife Ellen and the late Allaire duPont 20 years ago, will remain active on the board of directors.

“Herb’s vision, his generous spirit, his energy, and his guidance have changed the lives of countless horses and people,” said Dan Rosenberg, vice president of TCA, in a release. “He serves as an example to us all as we work to continue the mission of TCA.”

TCA has distributed more than $16 million to more than 200 accredited charities that work to fulfill TCA’s mission of providing a better life for Thoroughbreds, both during and after their racing careers by supporting retirement, rescue, and research, and by helping the people who work with them.

“I'm very proud of our accomplishments over the past 20 years but this is only a start,” said Moelis in a statement. “I look forward to continuing to work within TCA to advance our important mission for the next 20 years and beyond.”

TCA was formally affiliated with the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association in 2008 and is now the charitable arm of the organization. TCA’s affiliation with TOBA has allowed it to further expand its national reach and provides the continuity needed to carry on its mission into the future.

“Herb’s vision of creating a national charity for our sport will be his legacy for many years to come,” said Dan Metzger, president of the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association.  “His energy and devotion to the cause of the Thoroughbred has created the heightened awareness and success that future generations must meet and exceed. Countless horses and individuals are indebted to Herb for his tremendous work.”

TCA’s primary fundraiser is its annual Stallion Season Auction held each December in Lexington.  The 2009 Stallion Season Auction raised $1.7 million and will be distributed to TCA grantees in June.

Donations to TCA are always accepted and can be made in the form of cash donations or as donations in lieu of flowers, birthday gifts, or other occasions. To make a donation visit
