When Pool 1 of the Future Wager for the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) closed Feb. 14, the horses included as the “all others” option was the 3-2 favorite.
The “all others” category, also referred to as the mutuel field, consists of all 3-year-olds other than the 23 other individual horses upon which wagers were taken during the three-day wagering period. A total of $466,048 was wagered in Pool 1. A total $385,995 was wagered on win bets and $80,053 in the exacta pool.
If a horse from the mutuel field wins the Derby, the Pool 1 payoff would be $5. Since the Future Wager was conceived in 1999, the mutuel field has been the betting favorite.
Among individual horses, Eclipse Award-winning 2-year-old male Lookin At Lucky was installed at 8-1 odds and was the second overall choice in the betting, followed by Remsen Stakes (gr. II) winner Buddy's Saintat 10-1.
The smallest exacta probable payoff from Pool1 would be the $51.20 return on the mutuel field over Lookin at Lucky.
