Sweetsouthernsaint is the sire of Kentucky Derby hopeful Storming Saint

Sweetsouthernsaint, sire of Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) hopeful Storming Saint, has been sold and will stand at Haras El Aguila in Panama. The 15-year-old son of Saint Ballado formerly was owned by Harold J. Plumley and Michael O’Farrell’s Ocala Stud Farm. Sweetsouthernsaint stood at Ocala Stud near Ocala, Fla.

Campaigned by Plumley, Sweetsouthernsaint won four of six races and earned $131,400. He captured the 1997 What a Pleasure Stakes (gr. III) and ran third in the 1998 Holy Bull Stakes (gr. III).

Storming Saint, who is one of 26 stakes horses by his sire, won the Feb. 27 Borderland Derby at Sunland Park in his 3-year-old debut. Sweetsouthernsaint’s dozen stakes winners also include grade II winner Sweetnorthernsaint, who ran second behind Bernardini in the 2006 Preakness Stakes (gr. I), plus Puerto Rican champion Soy Conquistador, a stakes winner this year.

Sweetsouthernsaint is out of the Tri Jet mare Sweetsoutherncross.
