Lone Star Meet to Open With Premiere Stakes

Opening night will feature the $50,000 Premiere Stakes.

Lone Star Park’s 2010 race meet opens April 8 with the 14th running of the $50,000 Premiere Stakes, a one- mile main track event for 3-year-olds and upward. Scheduled as race one on the 10-race card at the Grand Prairie, Texas track, the Premiere Stakes has an approximate post time of 6:35 p.m. CST.

The 8-5 morning line favorite for the Premiere is Clarence Scharbauer Jr.’s Coyote Legend. The Bret Calhoun trainee most recently scored an 8 1/2-length victory in the Jim’s Orbit Stakes at Sam Houston Feb. 20. The gelding by Gold Legend has reeled off three consecutive wins with Bobby Walker Jr. in the irons, who will ride once again April 8.

“He’s coming up to the race great,” said trainer Bret Calhoun. “He really moved forward from age 2 to age 3, and ever since we stretched him out in distance, he just seems to be getting better and better.”

Steve Asmussen, Lone Star’s all-time leading trainer by number of wins (919), will be represented in the Premiere by Ablaze With Spirit, second in this race last year. The son of American Spirit will be guided by Chris Landeros, who led all riders at Lone Star in 2009 with 97 victories.

Lone Star’s spring meet will run April 8 to July 18, Thursdays through Sundays.
