The Lexington is one of the final prep races for the May 1 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I), representing one of the final opportunities for contenders to pick up graded earnings necessary for the May 1 classic at Churchill Downs.
In 1999, Charismatic followed up a win in the Lexington with a Kentucky Derby victory. This year’s event drew a full field of 12, led by Uptowncharlybrown , who captured the Pasco Stakes earlier this year at Tampa Bay Downs prior to finishing third in the Sam F. Davis Stakes (gr. III) and fifth in the Tampa Bay Derby (gr. III). Uptowncharlybrown will also be a strong sentimental choice following the death earlier this week of his trainer Alan Seewald.
Saturday’s program, to be anchored by ESPN/ABC analyst and NFL network host Randy Moss, will begin at 5 p.m. ET, with post time for the Coolmore Lexington slated for 5:15 p.m. ET.
The Lexington will also be televised live on TVG.
