Pedulla Wins Preakness Media Award

Pedulla wins the David F. Woods Award for the second straight year

Pimlico will honor this year’s Preakness media awards winners at the May 13 Alibi Breakfast, two days before this year’s Preakness (gr. I). The ceremony is scheduled at the track at 9:30 a.m.

For the second consecutive year, USA Today’s Tom Pedulla is the recipient of the David F. Woods Award, this time for an inspirational feature on Calvin Borel before the jockey rode Rachel Alexandra to victory in the 2009 Preakness. The Woods Award honors the best story for the previous year.

Eclipse Sportswire photographer Scott Serio is the winner of the Jerry Frutkoff Preakness Photo Award, sponsored by Nikon. Serio captured the spontaneous emotion of Borel and assistant trainer Scott Blasi after Rachel Alexandra’s historical Preakness score.

The Old Hilltop Award will be given to NBC Sports anchor Tom Hammond, who has hosted the network’s Preakness coverage since 2001, and WBAL Radio reporter Scott Wykoff, for covering Thoroughbred racing with excellence and distinction.
