Mambo Meister Tries to Master Calder Stakes

Son of King Cugat is the only graded winner in the Memorial Day Handicap field.

Mambo Meister, fresh off a graded stakes win at Calder Casino and Race Course, heads a field of six in the May 31 Memorial Day Handicap (gr. III) at Calder for 3-year-olds and up. The son of King Cugat will break from the fourth post position under top weight of 121 pounds and will concede from four to seven pounds to his rivals.

The only graded stakes winner in the field, Mambo Meister got up near the wire to capture the Miami Mile Handicap (gr. IIIT) in late April by a head in what was his sixth career stakes win, all at Calder. He will be asked to go another sixteenth of a mile in the Memorial Day Handicap. Trainer Philip Gleaves has secured the return services of jockey M.R. Cruz.

Cinnamon Road, by Delaware Township, figures to get support by virtue of an 8 3/4-length score in a mile optional claiming race May 14 at Calder in one of his three starts this year. The front-running triumph came over Too Many Toyz, who also will contest the Memorial Day Handicap.

Cinnamon Road, whose sole career stakes win came at Calder last year, is trained by Milton Wolfson and will break from post position five.

Too Many Toyz, who drew the rail, has run at Calder the last 13 times and sports a four-race win streak during that stretch, highlighted by a score in the $200,000 Carl G. Rose Classic Handicap last fall. The son of Northern Afleet  is trained by Luis Olivares.

Causeway's Kin, with only eight career starts going in the Memorial Day Handicap, won twice at the Gulfstream meeting and ran second in the Sumter Stakes May 10 at Calder. The son of Giant's Causeway  is trained by Martin Wolfson.

The two other contestants, hard-knockers Dream Maestro and Unbridled Heat, have been out a total of 77 times and are still searching for their first stakes wins. Although Dream Maestro has lost the last 14 times, he has never been off the board during that stretch. His career eight stakes placings include a third in last year’s Memorial Day Handicap. The son of Concerto is trained by William Kaplan.

Unbridled Heat, who has 47 starts, won two claiming races at Gulfstream this year and placed in the Carterista Starter Stakes at the track in April in his last start. J.D. Braddy conditions the son of Unbridled Time.
