This year’s board election, for the first time, allowed nominating entities to assign proxies to shareholders. Voting, which began June 8 with 28 candidates, was conducted online. A record total of 62% of the available votes were cast.
“Our nominators have chosen a knowledgeable, talented, and experienced cross-section of breeders and owners representing the best of the Thoroughbred industry for service as members and trustees,” said Breeders’ Cup chairman William Farish Jr. in a release. “I am especially pleased with the record level of voter participation, which demonstrates how much our core constituents care about our organization.”
The Breeders Cup board of members and trustees consists of 48 individuals. Members and Trustees are elected by Breeders’ Cup foal and stallion nominators through a proportional shareholder voting system.
The board of members and trustees meets at least annually for the election of members to the 13-person Breeders’ Cup board of directors, which oversees the activities of the corporation. The board of members and trustees will vote for seven new members to the Breeders’ Cup board of directors July 16.
