Grade II winner Discreetly Mine, most recently runner-up in the Woody Stephens (gr. II) last month, will face five rivals, including filly Christine Daae, in the $200,000 Jersey Shore Stakes (gr. III) for 3-year-olds July 4 at Monmouth Park.
The six-furlong Jersey Shoe headlines Monmouth’s 12-race holiday program. Post time for the main track event is set for 4:52 p.m. (EDT).
Discreetly Mine will drop back to six furlongs for the first time since running fourth in the Spectacular Bid Stakes Jan. 9 on the slop at Gulfstream Park in his season debut. The son of Mineshaft won the two-turn Risen Star (gr. II) at Fair Grounds in March before finishing fourth in the Louisiana Derby (gr. II) and 13th in the Kentucky Derby (gr. I).
Bred and owned by E. Paul Robsham Stables and trained by Todd Pletcher, Discreetly Mine is 2-4-0 from 10 starts. John Velazquez has the mount on the 123-pound high weight.
Christine Daae will take on males for the first time in her career after finishing second by a nose in the six-furlong Red Cross Stakes at Monmouth June 5. The daughter of Giant's Causeway turned heads when she broke her maiden by nearly nine lengths in January at Gulfstream, then won a 1 1/8-mile allowance test convincingly over the same strip the following month.
But the chestnut filly faltered badly in the Bonnie Miss (gr. II) May 20, finishing fifth to Devil May Care after tiring badly in the stretch. She was given time off before returning in the Red Cross. Joe Bravo will ride Christine Daae for trainer Patrick Biancone. She is owned by Michael Imperio and Kona Stables.
Another talented sprinter is Cool Bullet, who won the Rumson Stakes as the odds-on favorite June 6 at Monmouth. The Red Bullet gelding, a $4,000 yearling purchase, won the Sugar Bowl at Fair Grounds as a juvenile and the Hansel Stakes on the Turfway Polytrack earlier this season. All of the aforementioned victories were at six furlongs. Brian Hernandez Jr. will have the mount for Steve Margolis.
