Six Graded Stakes Winners Eye WV Derby

At least six graded stakes winners could run in the West Virginia Derby.

At least six graded-stakes winners are expected to run in the $750,000 West Virginia Derby (gr. II) at Mountaineer Casino, Racetrack & Resort Aug. 7.

Track officials said that as of Aug. 2, the following 3-year-olds were pointing toward the 1 1/8-mile event: Kaleem Shah’s Concord Point, winner of the grade III Iowa Derby; Wertheimer and Frere’s Exhi , winner of the Coolmore Lexington Stakes (gr. II); Mr. and Mrs. A.C. Asbury’s Gleam of Hope, winner of the Jefferson Cup (gr. IIIT); Ike and Dawn Thrash’s Hurricane Ike, winner of the grade III Cliff's Edge Derby Trial; Olympia Star Inc.’s Skipshot , winner of the Swaps Stakes (gr. II); and Bob and Cathy Zollars and Mark Wagner’s Thiskyhasnolimit, winner of last year’s Iroquois Stakes (gr. III).

Others under consideration for the Derby include Steel Your Face Stables’ Yawanna Twist, second in the Gotham Stakes and Illinois Derby (both grade III) and a close fourth in the grade I Preakness Stakes.

Entries for the West Virginia Derby and eight other stakes on the program will be taken Aug. 3. The Derby, with a post time of 5:45 p.m. (EDT), will be broadcast live during a FOX Sports Net program from 5-6 p.m.
