Heiligbrodt Racing Stable’s homebred Tristanme, graded stakes placed in her last start, leads a field of 10 in the $150,000 Adirondack Stakes (gr. II) for 2-year-old fillies at Saratoga Aug. 14.
Sent off at 25-1 for trainer Steve Asmussen in the June 26 Debutante (gr. III) at Churchill Downs, Tritanme was nearly six lengths back at the top of the stretch but came flying on the outside to miss by a neck under Shaun Bridgmohan. The daughter of Bwana Charlie—Forever Full, by Full Out, broke her maiden in her third start one race prior at Woodbine.
Bridgmohan has the call again on Tristanme and they will break from post 9 in the 6 1/2-furlong contest.
Also stakes placed is Sabine Stable’s Florida shipper Because I Like It
, who broke her maiden by five lengths at Calder Race Course in May and was runner-up in the J J’s Dream Stakes July 10 over the same track. The Lion Heart
filly will be ridden Javier Castellano for Steve Standridge.
Both fillies are 6-1 on the morning line.
The only other filly with stakes experience is Nina Fever
, who is trained and co-owned by Wesley Ward. The daughter of Borrego
romped by eight lengths in her debut at Keeneland in April, then finished a tiring fifth in the Kentucky Juvenile (gr. III) later that month at Churchill. Eibar Coa will be aboard.
“Basically, I think she could have won the (Kentucky Juvenile) if things had gone her way,” said Ward. “Pressing the pace, she really didn’t know what to do. She’s bred to go further, and we’ve been pointing her to this race since then.”
Impressive maiden winners last out were Charles Lo’s Golden Phoenix
, who drew off to score by 6 1/2 lengths at Churchill June 24 as the 7-5 favorite, and Starlight Partners’ Position Limit
, a Bellamy Road
filly that came off the pace to win by nearly seven lengths July 14 on the Belmont slop.
Todd Pletcher trains Position Limit, who hit the wire in a 1:04.70 in the 5 1/2-furlong race that day. She was pegged as the 5-2 in the Adirondack and will have John Velazquez aboard.
“She caught an off racetrack in that race, but she had trained like she was capable of winning first out,” said Pletcher. “Since then she’s been training very well, and I think she will appreciate the extra distance.”
The 4-1 second choice is Alienation
, a Rock Hard Ten
filly owned by Natalie Baffert. She has done the bulk of her training over artificial surfaces on the West coast and arrived at trainer John Terranova’s Saratoga barn last week, looking sharp in her lone workout on a muddy track Aug. 10 when going five furlongs in a handy 1:00.02.
Martin Garcia is in from California to ride Alienation for Bob Baffert.
