Brereton Jones’ consistent 3-year-old filly Biofuel, a five-time winner on the Woodbine Polytrack, will take on seven division rivals in the $250,000 Selene Stakes (Can-III) on Sept. 26.
The homebred daughter of Stormin Fever enters the 1 1/16-mile contest off a neck victory in the local Belle Mahone Stakes Aug. 22 at the same distance. She has placed twice in grade I company this season and will likely draw much of the betting action in the Selene, which will go to post at 4:28 p.m. EDT as the program feature.
Trained by Reade Baker, who won the event in 2005 with Gold Strike and again in 2007 with Bear Now, Biofuel broke her maiden on the Woodbine main track in 2009 and scored in the Mazarine (Can-III) later that season before going on to place a close fourth in the Grey Goose Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (gr. I) at Santa Anita last November.
The bay filly began her 3-year-old season with back-to-back stakes wins at Woodbine before being shipped to New York for the summer, where she was third in the Mother Goose and runner-up to Devil May Care in the Coaching Club American Oaks (both gr. I).
Eurico Rosa da Silva has ridden Biofuel in her last eight starts and will get the mount once again. They will break from post 8.
Biofuel, who has a 5-1-1 record from 10 starts with earnings of $612,228, is out of the Indian Charlie mare Ms. Cornstalk.
Baker will also saddle Stronach Stables’ homebred Bubble Gum, who has a pair of wins on the Woodbine main track this year. The Awesome Again filly was second by a head last out in an Aug. 21 allowance tilt in Toronto. James McAleney, who won the Selene aboard Aurora Lights last year, will ride.
Making her debut over a synthetic surface will be Jim and Susan Hill’s Tizahit, winner of the grade II Demoiselle Stakes at Aqueduct last fall. The George Weaver trainee is 0-for-3 this season, including a fifth-place finish last out in the Aug. 21 Alabama (gr. I) at Saratoga. The daughter of Tiznow will have a new rider, Richard Dos Ramos.
Also in contention is Melynk Racing Stables’ homebred Barracks Road, a wire-to-wire winner of the Ontario Colleen Stakes Aug. 28 on the Woodbine turf. Winless in three starts on the main track as a juvenile, the Elusive Quality filly has made all five of her 2010 starts on turf, with three wins to show for her efforts. Corey Fraser will ride for trainer Mark Casse.
