Dowskin Wins Two Calder Titles

Dwoskin became the first person in Calder history to top trainer and owner standings.

Steve Dwoskin became the first individual in Calder history to lead both the trainer and owner standings simultaneously at a single meet. He won 34 races as a trainer and 27 races as an owner. He was the leading owner of the 2009 Calder and Tropical meets, but this marks his first training title at the track.

Following Dwoskin in the trainer standings were Bill White with 30 wins, and David Fawkes with 27. In the owner standings, Jacks or Better Farm sent out 15 winners at the meet. Breakin Wind Farm had 14 victories

Calder Casino & Race Course concluded the live racing portion of its 101-day Calder meet Sunday, Oct. 17. The meet was highlighted by its annual cornerstone events, the Summit of Speed (July 10) and the Festival of the Sun (Oct. 16).  Big Drama and Jessica Is Back won memorable renewals of the Smile Sprint (gr. II) and Princess Rooney Handicap (gr. I), respectively, on Summit of Speed day, earning automatic berths to the Breeders’ Cup at Churchill Downs through the “Win and You’re In” program.  At the Festival of the Sun, Awesome Feather completed a sweep of the filly division of the Florida Stallion Stakes, only the third time in the 29-year history of the program.

Leading the jockey standings was Luis Saez with 142 wins after a season-long competition with Manoel Cruz, who finished second with 130. Finishing third in the standings with 76 wins was Angel Moreno

Calder remains open for simulcasting Oct. 18-20 before starting its 51-day Tropical Meet Thursday, Oct. 21.
