Mine That Bird Works Three Furlongs From Gate

Derby winner Mine That Bird worked three furlongs at Churchill Downs Oct. 31.

Double Eagle Ranch and Buena Suerte Equine’s Mine That Bird, winless since the 2009 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I), worked three furlongs from the gate in :37 2/5 Oct. 31 at Churchill Downs in his final prep for the Nov. 6 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (gr. I) at the Kentucky racetrack.

Michael Baze was aboard Mine That Bird, who started inside of Derivative. The Derby winner went his first quarter-mile in :25 and galloped out a half-mile in :50 2/5 on a fast track.

“I just wanted to sharpen him up, and I think it worked,” trainer D. Wayne Lukas said. “Fitness-wise, he is dead fit. But I still don’t know if I have him quick enough.”

Mine That Bird, a 4-year-old gelding by Birdstone , has regularly raced around two turns. The Dirt Mile will be around one turn at Churchill.

Lukas took over training of Mine That Bird about five months ago. “It has been frustrating because he has been doing well physically,” Lukas said of the gelding’s inability to hit the board in his three starts during the summer. “I think it is pretty much mental, and I don’t know if his heart is in racing.”
