Iqbaal Tops 11th Session of Keeneland Auction

Grade III-placed Iqbaal sold for $70,000 to top the Nov. 18 Keeneland sale session.

Trainer Wesley Ward purchased graded stakes-placed Iqbaal for $70,000 from Shadwell Farm to top the Nov. 18 session of the Keeneland breeding stock sale.

By Medaglia d'Oro  out of the Storm Cat mare Queen’s Lady, Iqbaal finished third in the grade III Pegasus Stakes at Meadowlands in 2009 at the age of 3 in his third career start. He hasn’t raced since.

Ward indicated that he was considering returning the 4-year-old colt, bred in Kentucky by Dell Ridge Farm, to training.

A colt by Sharp Humor out of the Delineator mare Anotherbusride sold for $50,000 to bring the session’s second-highest price. Out of the family that produced Oak Leaf Stakes (gr. I) winner Tali’sluckybusride, the colt was purchased by Silver Oaks Farm and was consigned by Blandford Stud (Padraig Campion), agent.

Keeneland sold 225 horses for $1,669,900 Nov. 18. The average for the day was $7,422 and the median $4,500. For the comparable session in 2009, 233 horses brought $1,778,400 for an average of $7,633 and a median of $5,000.

After 11 days of the 13-day sale that concludes Nov. 20, Keeneland has sold 2,650 horses for a gross of $145,972,900, an average of $55,084, and a median of $20,000. At this point in 2009, 2,494 horses had been sold for $157,728,400 for an average of $63,243 and a median of $24,000.
