Louisiana Man Charged in Horse Shooting

A Louisiana man is facing an animal cruelty charge after allegedly shooting a horse in November.

Workers at the Kansas City Southern railroad yard discovered a 13-year-old Appaloosa mare wandering around the railway property in Caddo Parish on Nov. 13. The mare had sustained a single gunshot wound to the abdomen. According to the Caddo Parish Sheriff's Department, witnesses said the mare was running along a roadside when it was wounded by a gunshot fired from a passing car. The horse was later euthanized due to the severity of her injuries.

Deputy Justin McDonnell of the Caddo Parish Sheriff's Department said that on Nov. 29, Parish law enforcement authorities arrested Xavier Strickland in connection with the incident.

"He was charged with aggravated cruelty to an animal, which is a felony," McDonnell said.

Strickland remains incarcerated at the Caddo Correctional Center after failing to post a $50,276 bond, McDonnell said.
