California Owner James Vreeland Dies

Vreeland raced four graded stakes winners alone and in partnership.

James Vreeland, a successful California owner, died Dec. 20 of cancer at his Buellton, Calif., home. He was 65.

Vreeland, whose family was involved in the car industry while he was growing up in Michigan, owned a car dealership in Buellton and advertised himself as “Mr. Nobody.” The slogan must have worked because Vreeland proved successful in the car business.

Vreeland raced 11 stakes winners alone and in partnership, including graded winners Devious Boy, Evening Promise, Islay Mist, and Untouched Talent. Vreeland was the breeder of added-money winner Test the Waters.

Survivors include sons Dan and Jim Jr. and daughter Pam.
