The Maryland Jockey Club has announced that 15 stakes totaling $1,275,000 have been scheduled for the 49-day 2011 winter meet at Laurel Park. According to the MJC, the stakes schedule was worked out through an agreement with the Maryland Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association and Maryland Horse Breeders Association.
Headlining the stakes program are a pair of grade II, $150,000 seven-furlong sprints on President’s Day weekend: the Barbara Fritchie Handicap for fillies and mares on Feb. 19 and the Feb. 21 General George Handicap.
The meet begins Saturday, Jan. 1, with a nine-race card. Live racing will take place at the central Maryland track four days a week on a Wednesday through Saturday schedule (with holiday exceptions) through Saturday, March 26.
The stakes schedule is similar to the 2010 meet, which was longer than the one planned for 2011. During the 58-day winter/spring meet of 2010, Laurel featured 16 stakes with combined purses of $1 million.
