Alec's Moon Smart Winner of Portland Oaks

Hollendorfer-trained filly ventures north for first leg of Black-Eyed Susan series.

Odds-on Alec's Moon made easy work of the $82,700 Portland Meadows Oaks after steadying early, cruising to a 6 1/2-length victory with leading jockey Joe Crispin aboard for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer Jan. 29 in Oregon (VIDEO).

The one-mile race, part of the Black-Eyed Susan 2.2 program for 3-year-old fillies, was the richest to be run at Portland Meadows since 1987, when the $100,000 Coors Mile was held. That race was won by Present Value, ridden by Bill Shoemaker.

If Alec's Moon can win the Santa Anita Oaks (gr. I) March 5, the Gulfstream Park Oaks (gr. II) April 2, and the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes (gr. II) May 20, owners Hollendorfer, Mark DeDomenico, and John Carver will receive a $2 million bonus, and the trainer, a $200,000 bonus. The program is offered by MI Developments, which owns the tracks in the series.

Alec's Moon was not far off the pace in the early going but steadied off rivals in traffic before moving up quickly on the outside to grab the lead nearing the six-furlong point. She held a clear advantage in the stretch, and in spite of drifting out continued to build on her lead all the way to the wire.

Formal Plan, ridden by Mark Anderson, ran second by 4 1/4 lengths over Chick Power, with Deborah Hoonan-Trujillo aboard. The final time for the one mile distance was 1:40.13.

A bay filly by Malibu Moon --Bello Ciello, by Conquistador Cielo, Alec's Moon was eased in her last start, the Santa Ynez Stakes (gr. II) at Santa Anita Jan. 15. She has won three of seven races lifetime with two seconds and has earned $97,585 with the winning share of $45,485. This was her first stakes win.

David Garvin bred Alec's Moon, a $125,000 Keeneland September yearling sale in 2009, in Kentucky.

Under equal weight of 121 pounds, she paid $3.20, $2.40, and $2.20 while keying a $13.40 exacta. Formal Plan returned $3.40 and $2.80. Chick Power was $4.20 to show.
