Mahbooba Seeks to Add UAE Oaks to Resume

Mahbooba will face six other rivals in the UAE Oaks (UAE-III) at Meydan Feb. 24.

Mahbooba will try to add another stakes victory to her already glittering resume when she faces six other fillies in the $250,000 UAE Oaks Sponsored by Al Tayer Motors (UAE-III) at Meydan Racecourse Feb. 24. The 9 1/2 furlong contest is one of two stakes races that highlight the Thursday evening program at Meydan.

The 4-year-old daughter of Galileo enters the Oaks off of a scintillating victory over Reem in the listed UAE 1000 Guineas Sponsored by Etisalat Feb. 3. Her stablemate Reem most recently finished a strong second to River Jetez in last week’s Balanchine Stakes Sponsored by Emirates NBD (UAE-IIT).

Mahbooba races as a homebred for Sheikh Mohammed and is trained by Mike de Kock. She has won four of her six lifetime starts, and has never finished out of the money. As a juvenile racing in South Africa, Mahbooba captured the Golden Slipper (SAf-I) and was third in the Allan Robertson Championship (SAf-I).

This will be the first time the bay filly will race beyond eight furlongs, but everything in her pedigree says that she’ll not have a problem with the extra distance. Out of Sogha, an unraced daughter of Red Ransom, Mahbooba hails from the immediate female family of North American Horse of the Year, Lady's Secret, and Japanese champion, Believe.

Christophe Soumillon will have the mount.

De Kock will also run Empire Rose in the Oaks. The daughter of Sunray Spirit has won two of her eight starts, and was just beaten a nose in the Pretty Polly Stakes (SAf-II) last year. In her most recent start, Empire Rose finished fourth to Mahbooba in the UAE 1000 Guineas. Kevin Shea will ride.

An intriguing new rival in the Oaks is the Irish-bred Electric Waves. A 3-year-old daughter of Exceed And Excel, Electric Waves will be making her first start for her new connections, owner Prince Sultan Al Kabeer and trainer Naif Alatawi. The Saudi Arabian-connections purchased Electric Waves for $331,000 at the 2010 Tattersalls October sale.

As a 2-year-old, Electric Waves won four of seven starts, which included a victory in the Sodexho Prestige Cornwallis Stakes (Eng-III). Her only poor performance was in the Polypipe Flying Childers Stakes (Eng-II) where she finished seventh to multiple stakes winner, Zebedee, but was only beaten a total of two lengths. The biggest question surrounding the filly regards her stamina. This will be the first time Electric Waves will have raced beyond five furlongs. Jockey Richard Mullen will be aboard.

Godolphin will send two fillies to the post in the Oaks, Abtasaamah and Khawlah. Abtasaamah will try and rebound from a poor showing in the UAE 1000 Guineas, where she finished a dull fifth. Prior to that race, the daughter of Distorted Humor , who is a half-sister to champion 2-year-old colt, Midshipman , finished a good third in the UAE 1000 Guineas Trial. Ted Durcan will ride.

Frankie Dettori will have the mount aboard the lightly-raced Khawlah. The daughter of Cape Cross hails from the immediate family of champions Sea The Stars and Galileo, and made three starts as a juvenile last fall. After finishing a close second in her debut, Khawlah broke her maiden going a mile at Newmarket. Moved into stakes company for her next start, she finished a good third in the Sakhee Oh So Sharp Stakes (Eng-III) to Havant. The added distance of the Oaks should be well within her scope.

Meydan Classic Draws Field of 11

The listed Meydan Classic Sponsored by Al Tayer Motors, which will be run immediately prior to the Oaks, attracted a competitive field of 11, headlined by the top three finishers of the Feb. 3 Meydan Classic Trial Sponsored by Etisalat.

Lord Of The Stars, who captured the Trial by 2 3/4 lengths over Krypton Factor, will try and make it two in a row over that rival. The 3-year-old colt by champion Speightstown , (out of a half-sister to grade I winner, Tout Charmant), was originally trained in England by Ralph Beckett for owners Mogeely Stud and Mrs. Maura Gittins. At the end of his juvenile season he was sold for $84,000 to Ahmad Al Shaikh at the 2010 Doncaster November sale. He is now trained by David Simcock. Tadhg O’Shea will ride.

Krypton Factor will be looking for his first victory at Meydan, having finished second in the Meydan Classic Trial and third in the UAE 2000 Guineas Sponsored by Dubal (UAE-III). The 3-year-old gelded son of Kyllachy has made 13 career starts, winning five and finishing in the money ten times. Kieren Fallon will ride for owner/trainer Fawzi Nass.

Introvert is the third contestant to come out of the Meydan Classic Trial. The son of Iffraaj has only won one of his eight lifetime starts, but has always been very competitive, having finished in the money six times. Ahmed Ajtebi will be aboard the Mahmood Al Zarooni trainee.

Other contenders in the field include Godolphin’s Janood (Medicean), Sonoran Sands (Footstepsinthesand), and Ahlaain (Bernstein).
