Old Friends Derby Hat Auction Continues

“The Ogygian” is the fifth hat in a series of six chapeaus to be auctioned.

“Hats Off to the Horses: The Road to the Derby,” an online auction of Kentucky Derby hats, continues March 1 with “The Ogygian,” the fifth hat in a series of six chapeaus to be auctioned.

The hats have been created by custom millinery Sally Faith Steinmann of Maggie Mae Designs and 100% of the online proceeds will benefit Old Friends, the non-profit organization in Central Kentucky dedicated to the dignified retirement of former racehorses.

Steinmann has created six hats, each inspired by one of the champions retired at Old Friends, and one will be auctioned each month leading up to this year’s Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) on May 7.

This month’s hat is “The Ogygian,” named in honor of the 21-year-old horse who has been at Old Friends since 2005.

For this hat, Steinmann incorporated mainly red and black, the racing-silk colors of Tartan Farms, which campaigned the sprinter in 1985 and 1986. A red dupioni silk was chosen for the base of the hat, which was then adorned with row upon row of red, chocolate, and black tulle and silk organza.

The Ogygian also features as its centerpiece the “Dozen Roses” pattern, a trademark of Maggie Mae Designs. One dozen hand-rolled red rose curls, each made of swirling layers of silk organza, China silk, and dupioni silk, encircle the crown of the hat.  Each rose curl is framed with fabric leaves and chocolate tulle sprays.
