James Paul “J.P.” Seabeck, a member of the Washington Hall of Fame, died March 9. The Spokane, Wash., resident was 98.
Seabeck, who attended the August 2010 Hall of Fame ceremony in which he was inducted, served a term as president of the Washington Horse Breeders Association in the 1950s, and was the organization’s longest standing member.
Seabeck, who was the breeder and owner of several stakes winners, won the 1953 Longacres Mile with Ocean Mist. Campaigned in partnership, Ocean Mist also captured that year’s Premier’s British Columbia Championship. Seabeck’s last stakes winner, Charlie’s Pride, who was raced in partnership, captured the 2006 Portland Meadows Mile Handicap.
Seabeck, who also was a leading cattleman, is survived by a brother and four daughters.
